The Best Month for Cape Cod Whale Watching

Mid-April to October, and September is underrated.

Updated January 0001

The season runs mid-April through October, with real differences inside it.

July to September — the dependable core

Peak feeding on Stellwagen Bank, warmest weather, most animals. Also the busiest — sailings fill, so book rather than turn up.

September — the sweet spot

Warm enough, calmer than August, and noticeably quieter once the summer crowds leave. Sightings hold up well. If your dates are flexible, come now.

April and May — the shoulder

Cooler, rougher, fewer humpbacks settled in. It is also the window when critically endangered North Atlantic right whales move through, under legal vessel-distance rules that keep any encounter distant.

October

Animals still around; weather increasingly the deciding factor. Cancellations become common enough that you want flexible dates.

Book early in your stay

Weather cancellations are a normal part of the season on this coast. A sailing booked for the first half of your trip can be rescheduled; one booked for the last morning cannot.
