Cape Cod Whale Watching: Morning or Afternoon?

Morning, usually, and the reason has nothing to do with the animals.

Sea state decides your day

Wind on this coast builds through the afternoon. A morning sailing more often crosses calm water, which matters over three to four hours — and calm water also makes distant blows far easier to see, so your effective sighting rate goes up even with the same whales present.

The whales are not on a schedule

They feed when the food is there, throughout the day. Nobody can honestly tell you the animals are more active at a given hour on Stellwagen Bank.

When the afternoon is better

A genuinely calm forecast, and you want lower light for photographs. It also leaves the morning free, which suits people staying further up the Cape and driving down.

Seasickness, plainly

Take something before you board rather than when symptoms start. Stay on deck where you can see the horizon. Most miserable whale watches are preventable ones.
